Barrow County was created on July 7, 1814. The land for Barrow County was carved out of Gwinnett, Jackson and Walton counties. The county was named for David Crenshaw Barrow, an alumnus, professor and chancellor at the University of Georgia.

Barrow County is part of the metro Atlanta statistical area and is home to many municipalities that serve as suburbs for the cities of Atlanta and Athens. Some of these municipalities and other neighborhoods of Barrow County include: Auburn, Braselton, Bethlehem, Carl, Statham and Winder. Barrow is home to approximately 50,000 residents. Winder is the county seat of Barrow County. Winder is named in honor of John L. Winder, a railway proprietor who built an early rail line through the area. Barrow County has the distinction of being the site of one of the only Confederate victories during the Sherman's march through Georgia during the Civil War. Sherman's cavalry was defeated in the Stoneman's Raids during 1864 in Barrow County.

One of the major recreational areas in Barrow County is Fort Yargo State Park. Fort Yargo is a historic site and was originally established to protect settlers along an Indian Trial near Hog Mountain Road in the 18th century. Cherokee and Creek Indians were considered a dangerous threat to early homesteaders. Fort Yargo today features historic cabin sites and a 200 acre lake. It is visited each year by over 10,000 guests who enjoy its many amenities.

The major highways traversing Barrow County include the following: Interstate 85, U.S. Route 23, U.S. Route 29, U.S. Route 78, U.S. Route 278, State Route 8, State Route 11, State Route 53, State Route 81, State Route 82, State Route 211 and State Route 316.

Because of Barrow's prevalence of major interstates, highways and surface streets, Barrow County residents are susceptible to being victims in tractor trailer accidents and auto accidents. With its interstate layout and accompanying intersections, traffic lights and cross streets, Barrow County cities and unincorporated areas can be dangerous for drivers. Local lakes like Fort Yargo Lake and Lake Lanier also can be dangerous, as boating accidents and boating under the influence are unfortunately common.
