Barrow County was created on July 7, 1814. The land for Barrow County was carved out of Gwinnett, Jackson and Walton counties. The county was named for David Crenshaw Barrow, an alumnus, professor and chancellor at the University of Georgia.

Fort Yargo is a historic site and was originally established to protect settlers along an Indian Trial near Hog Mountain Road in the 18th century. Cherokee and Creek Indians were considered a dangerous threat to early homesteaders. Fort Yargo today features historic cabin sites and a 200 acre lake. It is visited each year by over 10,000 guests who enjoy its many amenities.
