A few days ago, Atlanta Journal-Constitution columnist Rick Badie shared his thoughts on something that has no doubt frustrated many Gwinnett County commuters this year: the budget-cut lights-out policy that has darkened I-85 from north of Jimmy Carter Boulevard to the Ga. 316 junction.
It’s hardly rocket science that being able to see where you’re going tends to result in safer driving, and that, conversely, low visibility is going to make Gwinnett County motor vehicle accidents that much more likely. However, the concerned commuter who tipped Badie off to the issue linked him to a study on the National Transportation Library’s website. He no doubt refers to this one, entitled Highway Lighting and Driver Performance. I invite you to take a look. The metrics it shows are powerful evidence that better visibility will lead to better driving in virtually any situation.
One quote in particular from the study, which Badie notes, is: “The average night/day accident rate was 66 percent greater on unlighted freeways than on lighted freeways, and night accidents could be reduced by an average of 40 percent by the illumination of an unlighted freeway.” Such statistics speak for themselves.
Luckily, according to the Gwinnett County Department of Transportation’s Kim Conroy, the county has contacted officials at Jackson EMC and Georgia Power. As a result, the unlit sections of I-85 should be illuminated once again within the next 30 to 45 days. Let’s hope Gwinnett County drivers will stay extra cautious and safe until then.
