Practice Area photoClayton County was created in 1858 and was named in honor of Augustin Smith Clayton, a Georgian who served in the US House of Representatives from 1832-1835. The county seat of Clayton County is Jonesboro, Georgia.

Clayton County is located in the northern, central part of the state of Georgia and is included in the Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Marietta, Georgia, metropolitan statistical area. Home to approximately 280,000 residents, Clayton has a majority African American community. The demographics of the county have shifted dramatically in the past 30 years. In 1980, Clayton County was 91% white and 9% African American.

Clayton County is the site of Tara, the mythical plantation of Scarlett O'Hara in Margaret Mitchell's epic Gone With the Wind. The sequel and prequel, Rhett Butler's People and Scarlett, were also set in Clayton County and partially filmed here.

Clayton County is home to Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, the busiest airport in the world. Airtran Airways, formerly ValuJet is headquartered in unincorporated Clayton County.

Clayton County is home to many municipalities that serve as suburbs for the city of Atlanta. Some of these municipalities and other neighborhoods of Clayton include: College Park, Forrest Park, Jonesboro, Lovejoy, Morrow and Riverdale.

The major highways traversing Clayton County include the following: Interstate 75, Interstate 85, Interstate 285, Interstate 675, U.S. Route 19, U.S. Route 23, U.S. Route 29, U.S. Route 41, State Route 3, State Route 54, and State Route 85, State Route 138, State Route 351, State Route 401, State Route 407 and State Route 413.
