The beginnings of the city of Marietta were established in the 1820s with the construction of a few homes near Kennesaw. In the 1830s the city was officially recognized by the State of Georgia and was named Marietta after the wife of Georgia Supreme Court Judge Thomas Willis Cobb. During the Civil War, General Sherman invaded the city and it was the first city to burn during Sherman’s March to the Sea.
