Sideswipe Car Accidents
Sideswipe car accidents occur frequently on metro Atlanta and Georgia's roads and highways. They occur when vehicles driving side-by-side collide after one of the vehicles attempts to make a lane change or swerves into another lane of traffic. Sometimes sideswipe car accidents happen when a negligent driver fails to check whether he or she can safely make a lane change prior to entering the lane or prior to merging onto a roadway. Sideswipe car accidents can also happen when a driver is distracted, falls asleep or is intoxicated. Although many vehicles are are now equipped with side airbags and are reinforced to help keep car occupants safe in a sideswipe accident, sideswipe car accidents can, and do, cause serious and fatal injuries. Sideswipe accidents can involve multiple vehicles depending on the circumstances. Speed can also be a major factor in sideswipe accidents. This can occur when a driver fails to leave sufficient distance between his or her vehicle and those in the lane into which that driver is trying to move.

Georgia law requires that motor vehicle drivers signal before turning, changing lanes, slowing or stopping. Under Official Code of Georgia section 40-6-123 (a) drivers must not “change lanes or move right or left upon a roadway unless and until such movement can be made with reasonable safety." This provision also requires that vehicles must provide a proper and timely signal. An appropriate signal must “be given continuously for a time sufficient to alert the driver of a vehicle proceeding from the rear in the same direction,” for example, and must indicate their intention to turn or change lanes. Unfortunately, very often drivers behave as if they are the only vehicle on the road and a driver who fails to warn other drivers that they intend to make a lane change or intend to merge into traffic can cause a dangerous sideswipe car accident.
When drivers fail to abide by Georgia law or are negligent or reckless in their driving, a sideswipe car accident can occur.
